Red

Alone in this dreamless world,
I stumbled blindly uphill
My feet catching on the rinds,
The bony hands of the dead.
Soul filled with intense despair,
I searched in vain for understanding
Upon this rocky funeral pyre.
All my hopes began to perish
When I sank to my knees
And my eyes filled with tears;
I saw a darkly shining eye,
Peering at me silently,
Dissecting my spirit.
Spurred on by morbid curiosity,
I plunged my hands into filth.
Skulls and hair crumbled,
Entangled my fingers-
Sharp as garotte wire.
Still I pressed on.
At the heart of it all,
I found a soul like mine,
Reaching out quietly with a smile.
A bleeding raw agony
Found her gentle fingertips.
Recalling all my strength,
I tugged and pulled there,
My feet encased in fetid muck.
As the muscles in my shoulders tore
Wings enfolded me,
Pulling me closer
To the beloved heart of darkness.
